January 9Jan 9 Author Question 99: SportsWhat was the first US City to host the Olympics?A: St. LouisB: Los AngelesC: SeattleD: Atlanta
January 10Jan 10 A: St. LouisThe Olympics took place during the World's Fair of 1904. That Worlds Fair also introduced ice cream cones and iced tea, and popularized cotton candy (fairy floss), puffed rice cereal, and peanut butter. Some claim it also introduced the hot dog bun, as prior to that, hot dogs were served with a fork and eaten like a sausage. No cardboard dishes back then, and ice cream was served in glass bowls which were supposed to be returned and washed, but too many people kept the bowls and plates as souvenirs. A pizzelle maker was located near one of the ice cream vendors (his pizzelles weren't selling, and the ice cream vendor had no bowls!). He started making pizzelles and while they were still pliable, shaped them into a cone shape that the ice cream guy could scoop into. They split profits 50/50. The legend has it that both men became millionaires by the time the fair closed.I love that story! Edited January 10Jan 10 by citytrader

January 13Jan 13 Author We made it to 100!!!!Question 100: FoodUntil the late 1970s, pistachios were dyed red…why?A: To hide the discolorations on the shellsB: Protect consumers skin from toxic oils on the shellsC: The first company to distribute the nuts widely was named ‘Red Hand Packing Company’D: This was an ancient tradition passed down from Pakistan
January 13Jan 13 Hmm, no idea. I'm against D: the ancient tradition because as I recall from history classes (Not actually being there as Wagi will assert!), red dye (cinnabar) was expensive, so I don't think they would waste it on nuts. I like the company name, but sounds not quite like a real thing, I don't think a dye would protect you from oils, so I'm going to go with A: To hide the discolorations on the shells. I seem to remember something about the shells being damaged or get nasty during shipping, and since most pistachios are now grown here in the USA, perhaps they aren't handled as much? Total guess here.
