April 11, 20241 yr And here, as threatened promised are some night screens for this same section of Kansas... Hat's Fantastic Millinery Shop... Hailey's Haberdashery... The Hungry Dragon Chinese Restaurant and Sushi Palace... MGM Grand Theater... One can almost hear the sticky floors... Kansas Chocolate Shoppe and the Coffee Shop and Bakery (I'm kinda proud of how the chocolate and coffee shop signs turned out...) Baum's Wonderful World of Books... Fully detailed interior... Ray's Barbershop...fully detailed billboard image. and City Drug... Now...don't wander too far off 'cause we still have a whole 'nother block of shops to look at! But we'll take a break so yer eyeballs can rest from all this awesomeness... Edited April 11, 20241 yr by Wabigbear
April 11, 20241 yr I like the Hungry Dragon. Just add a Chinese-style awning, decorative windows and doors, a few hanging lanterns, slap some red (lead) paint on the front, and what started out as a typical mid-west store front becomes a bit of the Orient... well, Americanized Orient. On the Theater marquee, who is this Garland Bolger fellow you speak of? 😛 I love the curved bay window on Baum's...Books. It gives it a very bookstore-ish look. Hmmm, the Barbershop always seems to be closed. Not sure what that means.
May 2, 20241 yr Sorry about the pause... I came down with pneumonia and had a lovely two week vacation in the hospital. But I'm back! We'll continue our stroll down Main Street Kansas... Just past Hamilton's Department Store we find the American Florist shop... In the middle of the street is the memorial statue to L. Frank Baum... Just around the corner is Bert's Cafe... Thorpe's Hardware is next, where you can pick up your Wonderful World Of Oz-themed souvenir can of 10-40w oil or find the right tool to tighten your nuts... The County Notary Office... The town Mercantile for all your grocery needs... A Dentist office and a small hotel for travelers to this fair city... Watch Repair Shop is next door... The Railway Express Office ends this block... Almira Gulch's Mansion dominates the end of the block as she does life in the county. Her infamous bike stands ready... Miss Gulch doesn't welcome many visitors... Edited May 2, 20241 yr by Wabigbear
May 2, 20241 yr Pneumonia is nasty business; glad you kicked it... and not the bucket. Welcome back! I like the lion logo homage above Bert's Cafe. I'd try one of Bert's burgers... but I'm such a coward. "or find the right tool to tighten your nuts...". Umm, I think I'll just let that one be. Almira needs to hire someone to paint her mansion and tidy up her yard. But I'm sure she would be aghast at the thought of spending even one penny on such foolishness.
May 11, 20241 yr Thanks for the kind remarks gentlemen! To finish up our look at Main Street Kansas, here's some night-time images... Dogs are not allowed at any Gulch owned property or facility... Gulch Savings & Loan... If Gulch Bank won't give you a loan, there's always the handy Gulch Pawn Shop next door... Justa Momento has a little more period-appropriate sign I made... The Baum Museum... Kansas Cases and Bags... Hamilton's Department Store... There's still a rack of Dorthy Gale dresses on sale...wonder if they have my size? Candle-light dining at Bert's Cafe... Anyone with a desire for late-night screwing or cleaning their pipes is in luck at Thorpes... Grab a half a roast chicken and a gallon of milk after you're done next door at the Mercantile, or get your teeth straightened at the dentist... Make sure you're always on time at our watch repair shop... The Railway Express Office anchors the end of this block... Almira Gulch is so cheap she eats her nightly meal of cold oatmeal and saltine crackers by lamplight in her room - the rest of the house remains unlit and unheated... Edited May 11, 20241 yr by Wabigbear
May 11, 20241 yr I like how the door to the Bank resembles a medieval castle portcullis to guard the money inside. "There's still a rack of Dorthy Gale dresses on sale...wonder if they have my size?" Oh, let's hope not. "Anyone with a desire for late-night screwing or cleaning their pipes is in luck at Thorpes..." Oh dear... For a second, I thought the small sign next to the Mercantile sign said "Banned Goods". Now I'm wondering what sort of goods are banned, and who has the chutzpah to sell banned items that go against Almira Gulch's decrees. The town has a completely different vibe at night. Nice update!
May 15, 20241 yr Just when you think this project can't get any more gorgeous... the details on those street buildings and storefronts are insane. Hard to believe this is even Planet Coaster anymore! there's this illusion of the reality, but it's not really really real, like it's beside and inside and inside and beside, but never on top.. nevermind, just kidding but not really
May 15, 20241 yr Thanks for the kind comments - much appreciated! Citytrader and I trade off working on each bench. On this one Citytrader had laid out most of Main Street and it's structures, then I pretty much created the entrance area, the parking lots and part of the the backstage area. At one time the entrance had a very different look - I had the idea to have a sub-area devoted to MGM and Hollywood - guests would even enter a version of Grahman's Chinese Theater to access a studio tour showcasing the making of the Wizard of Oz (you can still see glimpses of this idea with the collection of soundstage buildings). Then we decided to scrap that idea and concentrate more on following the Goddard Group plans for the park. Once I finished the front part of the park, Citytrader tweaked things there and finished off placement of the Main Street buildings and started building Gale Farms and Marvel's World areas along with Munchkinland. Once he was done we traded off, I added a structure or two to his work, then added some details to his great base structures. Yes, we do tweak each other's work, but our styles are pretty much in sync anyways so it's always an improvement to the others work. Since we needed to break up the park into multiple benches (mostly due to those 'details' I sometimes get carried away adding...LOL! ), it's allowed each of us to work at our own pace on different areas. For instance, the Haunted Forest area I've been working on, along with the Emerald City bench while Rich has been doing great things on the Yellow Brick Country bench. Works out great because it allows us to do things like create TMTK items for the park as we go (now at 535 pieces...yikes!)
May 17, 20241 yr Author One of the smallest areas of the park is the Gale Farm. Let's take a look around, shall we? At the end of Main Street is a small meet and greet area. Right now, Glinda and her bubble are available to greet guests; As we head east, we can see the farm just down the road; One of the full service restaurants is located here at the farm, Aunt Em's Country Kitchen, serving a full selection of down home goodness! Toto's Animal Revue is an interactive show with lots of trained barnyard critters to amuse and excite the kiddies; A fun spin and puke called Zeke's Barnstormers fills a corner of the farm; A small farmer's Market. Looks like bad weather on the horizon!; A root beer stand; "Somewhere over the Rainbow" The Gale farmhouse. Think there's a storm brewing!; Dorothy! It's a twister!!! Edited May 17, 20241 yr by citytrader
May 17, 20241 yr One has to wonder: How many pieces of bubble gum did it take to blow that huge of a bubble? Glinda must have chewed through a couple of cases of the stuff!... And how did she end up inside of the thing?!?! Sort of like a four dimensional Klein Bottle, where the outside is also the inside. Did Wagi make that bubble? Or perhaps it was another Workshop item? At first I thought that was an elephant at the base of the Gale farm windmill. The fence post looks like an elephant's trunk. But then I realized it's a donkey... which makes more sense than an elephant. 🫤 I bet Toto's Animal Revue has a caged chicken that plays a toy piano... for a quarter. So, how was the 'twister' made? Another Workshop item? Another Wagi creation? Maybe an in-game thing?
May 17, 20241 yr Author Some excellent questions! Yes, indeed, Wagi made the bubble, and that is actually a Cinderella figure inside it, but good enough to suggest Glinda, don't you think? Just noticed the donkey and the fence post! Too funny! I used that angle for the picture on purpose, of course! 🤣 Actually, a turkey plays the piano. The chickens fly. The twister is indeed a workshop item. The gray swirling cloud is from the Ghostbusters pack. Looks great! Edited May 17, 20241 yr by citytrader
May 17, 20241 yr The twister I shamelessly borrowed from TommyT 067's "Tornado Chasers" bench. I saw his video and it had some of the most realistic looking tornado effects in Planet Coaster, really well done. I could never come close myself, so one of the twisters ended up transported mysteriously to Kansas. A huge thanks to TommyT! Here's his video if you haven't seen it before... And yes, I made the bubble! Took some trail and error to get it not only the color I wanted, but to be transparent while still being visible. I'm still kinda surprised that it turned out! LOL! I had just one of the flat 2D cutouts of Glinda inside, until Citytrader came up with the bright idea to use Cinderella - which works perfectly.
May 17, 20241 yr That donkey comment had me doing a where's Waldo search - I couldn't find it for quite a bit. Love the bubble idea and t6he twister looks great.
May 19, 20241 yr Author Thanks guys! You enter the Gale House through the front hall. Dorothy has quite a nice family! Out the back door, you enter the yard of the Gale family; Definitely a storm coming up. Looks like we lost a chicken! "What's that out the window, Toto?" "I have a feeling we're not in Kansas any more..." Edited May 19, 20241 yr by citytrader
May 21, 20241 yr Such a cool section of the park, I love how you're taking us through the journey into Oz too - everything looks fantastic! there's this illusion of the reality, but it's not really really real, like it's beside and inside and inside and beside, but never on top.. nevermind, just kidding but not really
May 22, 20241 yr Holy moly I'm behind on these updates! I laughed for several minutes at the "NO GIRL SCOUTS" sign crookedly plastered on that old Lady Gulch's fence 😆 Also, your Farmer's Market man looks oddly familiar... Something, sometime, eventually...
May 22, 20241 yr 8 hours ago, Kablary said: Also, your Farmer's Market man looks oddly familiar... Obviously he's been moonlighting at other farms! Wages in Kansas for farm laborers are sadly low it seems...
May 25, 20241 yr Author Thanks for all the nice comments, guys! There are several ways to enter the OZ sections of the park. We already showed you that you can ride the Twister ride and exit through a rainbow into Dorothy's House, which has managed to fall on the Wicked Witch of the East; There is also a seemingly innocent looking path that cuts through from Professor Marvel's land. That's also where the "Balloon Ride" can be picked up to take you straight to the Emerald City. Are those poppies? At the edge of the carnival area, there is an ominous looking gate that someone broke off the padlock from. I wonder what's down there? Man, this place is a nightmare. The E.P.A. is probably going hog wild over this place! I've never seen so much industrial waste; That's a weird rock formation. Maybe we can get a better look; There is even an old abandoned train here; Wow! An creepy abandoned factory; Holy Cow! I knew it had to be something sinister; Edited May 25, 20241 yr by citytrader
May 26, 20241 yr Hmmm. To me, the weird rock formation bears a slight resemblance to Miss Gulch herself; something about the hooked nose. With all the "This means you!" signs, I always mentally add "And your little dog too!". I'm wondering what kind of attraction The Haunted Forest is. Walk thru? Tracked ride? I guess we'll have to wait and see!
May 27, 20241 yr Author Of course, the best way to enter OZ is "over the rainbow"... Now you know why the Gulch mansion stands right in the middle of Main Street. It's a view block for the rainbow bridge to OZ! Edited May 27, 20241 yr by citytrader
May 27, 20241 yr I would love to see a bit more of an overview layout of what you have revealed so far. I'm not fully getting the kay of the land.
