[RCT3} Can anyone help with modifying some default/vanilla scenery packs?

Question

Posted (edited)

I've been trying to create a scenery pieces to eventually make a pack that is the original Coloured Walls pack, but with diagonal variants. I know there's a Glass Walls Modified (Dark Ridley) that looks like it uses the original glass wall pieces, so I was wondering if there was any way to access the original models/textures* to edit and re-import to RCT3?

*I did manage to rip the textures and apply them to a basic wall piece, however the results weren't the best (shown below). The colour is all washed out. Do you think what I'm trying to attempt is possible, and if so, is it simpler than having to re-create every single piece and apply textures? If not, any advice on how to tackle the texture problem I'm having? Honestly, I'm not a massive 3D modelling buff, so I think I'd be best leaving it to someone else to try, but I know that that's a big ask (hence why I'd rather trying to do it myself).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The CTR Creator 1.00 by Markus Lomberg has under the Tools menu a "Recover lost MOD/XML files from Model.ovl" button that will usually extract texture files as BMPs and 3d models as XML files that can be changed and then made into new OVLs using the RCT3 Importer v18b2 by Belgabor. It's one of the ways I've found to change scenery objects that people have made over the years... extract the XML and textures using CTR Creator, make any alterations I need, then create new OVLs using the Importer. (eventually I'll get around to writing up the entire process in my "Editing OVL Files" tutorial)

The main issue is that the CTR Creator can't read ALL .ovl files... so there are times this process doesn't work. However, after checking it myself, I find that it CAN unpack the model data from the walls you're looking to use. (at least, I think so... assuming that they're the files found under Style\Vanilla\WallSets\FlexiWallSet) I'm unsure though where the texture data is since these files don't seem to have texture data in them. (actually, I just found them under Style\Vanilla\WallSets\FlexiWallSet\FlexiWallSet01_Textures.common.ovl under the extracted files flexibasewalls.bmp and flexibasewalls-Alpha.bmp)

flexibasewalls.bmp

flexibasewalls-Alpha.bmp

Hope this helps! :^)

I'm pretty new at extracting textures. I tried using the RCT3 Dump application and it exported everything as SID files? I thought they'd be image files if they were textures but I don't know what I'm doing lol

To be honest, it's been many years since I used the Dump utility (JonWil made it, so you know it goes waaay back!). I do recall looking at some actual textures that it extracted, though. Maybe it was some other RCT3 tool that I used then? I don't think so; I'm pretty sure that this Dumper is the only utility we have that's capable of doing this. I can only suggest that you experiment with the Dumper and see if you can get the texture to be displayed.🙂

This looks similar to what I've used in the past. I think it was the Dumper I used to extract textures and NinjaRip to extract models (although I don't think it was actual model data, just built a model based on what it saw in a snapshot). I also never extracted the alpha textures, it was the multicoloured texture. I might try making a piece again using the alpha textures. Great help!
