As I age, and my kids are grown, I have scaled down my Halloween activities. Maybe the grandkids will light a new fire under me. But back in the day.....
My city I lived in had a Halloween House decoration contest/tour. It started with maybe 10 house and over the years bloomed to like 30 houses. Several of us were in in it for many years and had some very elaborate displays. The city put together a list of the houses, a suggested map, etc. I would win awards and trophies every year. It was lots of fun. A lot of work (standing out there every night for about 2 weeks, in the cold pouring rain sometimes).
My basic theme was dead pirates. I had several life size skeletons dressed up Hollywood style in old rip and torn pirate clothes. One was in the tree hanging lights, another on a keg holding a lit torch, another sitting on a treasure chest swinging his riches around. A few were animated. There was a graveyard with another leaning against a headstone. Theatrical lighting, smog, fake fire pots, etc.
The best was that I dressed up as a pirate, in a very cool Davy Jones mask and would stand at the edge of the display acting like an animatronic figure...and doing jump scares to the kids and moms as they came to the house. It was great fun. Some years I had other family members dress up as well. Some people would sit in chairs with their beers across the street to watch me scare people.
On weekend nights we would have a line of cars 50 or more waiting to drive by and jump out to check out the display. I used to have to buy over 600 pieces or more of candy to give away on Halloween night, People would come from all around.
I will have to dig up some old pics and share them.
