    In '77 I would go to the end of the road and enter a small red windowed box, slot a coin into the apparatus, lift a receiver, finger dial a number and tell the voice at the other end my news 😁 News was also spread in local newspapers and tabloids that you had to read. Posters, billboards and door to door flyers were common too.
